4Great! When it worksSep 01, 2010
For some unknown reasons, even to the Arc software manufacturer, this set up will make video copies with the audio out of sync. It can happen under any setting at any time. There is no identifiable pattern of use that causes the problem. This is very irritating since the videos must be captured in real time. You can waste a lot of time copying a movie only to find that it is unwatchable, unless you are deaf. You should preview the video you have captured before you attempt to make a disc to see if the audio is in sync with the video. If it's not, I suggest trying a different capture setting. The software seems to work best under the variable capture Vs. the constant rate capture mode, but if you use that setting you will default to a lower quality setting than you expect. The syncing problem might be related to the software/hardware setup with the PC but who knows?

5Hauppauge 1212 + PS3 = YouTubeAug 30, 2010
I purchased this mostly for the ability to capture decent video for PS3 game plays, but like that I can use it for TV. It is kinda expensive to buy one for just this reason when my captures will be uploaded to @YouTube, but it's a fun addition for when you want or need to capture video to share. While this item won't be for just anyone since it's not the most user friendly and cost effective item you've purchased, but I got it to work with no major hassles since I'm a techy person anyway, judging from other replies complaining of it ease of use, or lack thereof. Keep in mind, there isn't a hard drive built-in, so you'd need a PC to capture to; I have both a MacBook Pro and a Windows 7 netbook, however chose to use the netbook to capture the files since the supplied software was for PC vs. $30 3rd party software for Mac.

Video quality? Judge for yourself with my first video captured with the Hauppauge HD PVR (edited in iMovie): [...]

4Great when it starts to work right...Aug 27, 2010

Have no problem capturing gameplay off my ps3...That is, WHEN it's in 720p and 1080i.

When ever I had any signal below 720p hooked up, the program would crash.

I found that if I leave TotalMedia Extreme window at "medium", not full, it'll function with a 480p. Don't know why this would happen, since it functions perfectly with all of my HD at full screen.

Besides that, its pretty decent. Whole lot better than my Dazzle

2Extremely difficult to install & Glitchy!Aug 27, 2010
This product was extremely difficult to install. I worked at it for about 6 hours before figuring out that the component cable they supplied was defective. It had the green and blue markings transposed on one end. Yikes! The tech support guy I called had an attitude and was not helpful. During the software installation, it caused my computer to lock up and then it wouldn't boot. Later I had to go through Windows 7 startup repair, etc. I then had to re-install the software, uninstall it, and start clean. After I figured out what was wrong with the cable, I was able to install it with no further problems. The video quality is very good, but if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't buy this. The remote doesn't work at all. It is for 3rd party software and doesn't work with Windows Media Center. You can program it to work with your set-top box, but what's the point? I just use the regular set-top box remote instead.

Update 8/29/2010:
This product is also very glitchy. The image will sometimes lock up, the sound will sometimes go out, the COMPUTER will sometimes lock up from it. I have a really good system with quad core, NVIDIA Quadro 4800, etc. You have to unplug the USB to the device to get the computer to boot. Sometimes it will say there is a weak signal and then 2 seconds later be fine. I would avoid this product.

4Waited for This for YearsAug 23, 2010
I've been looking for an HD recorder like this for years to move HD programs off my Comcast DVR and every time that I've gone to the popular electronic stores and talked to the techs they kept telling me that such a product did not exist except for an add-on hard drive to TiVo. I was skeptical after having read the reviews until I realized the reviews I was reading were not recent. I suggest that you sort the reviews by latest first because it looks like Hauppauge and Arcsoft have updated their products to address the issues. I'm a retired electronic technician and electrical engineer and, although that doesn't qualify me to be an expert on the latest computer technology, file types, etc., I know what I'm talking about with a techie and I spend a lot of time recording and editing video as a hobby and believe me, this is one of the best pieces of equipment I have bought in years and it is worth every penny. After I hooked up the Hauppauge PVR to my Samsung HDTV and my Dell Windows Vista computer that I have in back of my TV cabinet, everything worked flawlessly. I made the connections between the PVR, my TV, and the computer, installed the software and when I started up the Arcsoft software, Voila! Everything performed better than I expected. I was able to easily record the HD programs to my computer and save them as a video file and even burned a Blu-ray disc onto a standard DVD on the Dell non-bluray DVD drive and play it back on my Sony Bluray player in amazing clarity just like the original program on my Comcast DVR. I haven't tried the TV program guide and remote yet since I don't need that feature. If there is any criticism it would be that sometimes the software is slow in starting, but again, I'm using Windows Vista on a low-priced Dell slimline computer with only 1 gB of ram. I have a slight issue with the software in that although the video file recorded to the computer is flawless on playback, I do notice a slight audio/video sync disparity after editing out unwanted material (commercials), but it is slight and much better after upgrading the Arcsoft software. I highly recommend this product for the application I use it for, moving 1080i programs off the cable DVR to the computer. I don't do gaming and can't rate that application.
